Problem is intermittent. Thought it was a failing hard drive but after replacing it the same problem exists. The new HD was set up as an image of the old so now wondering if there might be a software corruption problem. Else its a disk controller or other motherboard problem, I guess. How can I troubleshoot this?

Start up from your system installation disk by holding down the "C" key. If this fails you may have serious hardware problems. If it does start without problems from the optical drive then it's either the hard drive, hard drive cable or a software problem.
Run Disk Utilities. It's found on the second page pull down menu Utilities -> Disk Utility, when you start up from the DVD.
