While attempting to replace my lightning port, I tore my home button cable. I completed the work, but did not replace my home button as I do not have one available. So as it sits, all other parts are in place except for the home button. After reassembly, the phone will not turn on, or recognize that it is plugged in. Is this because the home button cable is broke?

No, a broken home button does not cause the phone to not turn on. Sorry to say but you probably have either broken a capacitor near the battery plug in the board or the charger port flex cable is damaged in a way.
I'm guessing you replaced the charger port because the phone stopped charging correct?
You didn't touch the other connectors on the iphone 5s right? Just the charger port and the battery connector correct?
If yes, then I don't think the capacitor near the battery is damaged.
If you can get another charger port, try plugging it in and then plugging the charging cable (Make sure you test it without it being installed.)
The capacitor is replaceable, if you lifted up the battery connector from the side away from the board then you most likely didn't damage the board at all.

I was able to charge it but only if I held the cord in a specific angle.
I have also replaced the battery.
Is the capacitor replaceable?
