A Samsung EVO 1TB mSATA drive into a iPod model MC297?

After successfully installing a new headphone jack and hold switch into my ipod Classic (Thanks to ifixit.com and member input). I am not afraid of it anymore. And perhaps it is going to my head.

I want to install a 1 tb ssd into it. As I understand it, I need a mSATA drive. I notice one for sale call a SAMSUNG 850 EVO mSATA 1TB Mini-SATA (mSATA) Internal SSD Single Unit Version MZ-M5E1T0BW on sale. Will this will work? My ipod model number is MC297 which according to the RapidRepair site is upgradeable to 1 TB.

What else do I need. The think that I need a zif connector? And a larger battery?

Thanks for the past and future help!

Mark

You need iFlash Sata mSata Adapter. One more comment on battery. Local iPod repair stores did not recommend me to use a larger battery because the current of larger battery made in China is not stable so it may cause overheating problem on connector in your logic board. I purchased one 3000mAh amd a thick back housing for it but I have not used it.

Tarkan iFlash-Sata is the only working one for mSATA. It's been tested that the 850 don't work well or at all, good with the 840.

Thanks for the info, rgarjr! Wish you had replied earlier as the SSD drive arrived in the mail yesterday. (They have a 30-day return policy and I have yet to open the package. Would you advise returning it without trying it? I have noticed a SAMSUNG 850 based ipod on eBay.

I guess u can try it but some people had no luck making it work. Only the 840s are known to work well.

I purchased Samsung mSata EVO 850 1TB and installed on 6th generation iPod Classic (thin 160GB model). It does not seem to work. But I am trying to solve the problem. !!

I thought that Samsung mSata 850 EVO 1TB does not work with all models of iPod classic 7th Gen. Now I purchased all parts needed to assemble my iPod Classic 7th Gen from ifixit.com and eBay. I mistakenly purchased the mainboard of iPod Classic 7th (may be 6th) with firmware 2.0.1 and Samsung mSata 850 EVO 1TB from eBay before I saw Tarkan Video from YouTube. As many of you posted on ifixit.com or YouTube.com, I tried it but it turn out to be not working. So, I purchased another mainboard of iPod Classic 7th Gen with 2.0.5 firmware becasuse I heard some rumors from local private iPod classic repair shop. I received the mainboard yesterday and it worked fine. Due to the some problem on the click wheel button, the MENU button did not lead me to the previous menu, but I am pretty sure that if I have another correctly working mainboard it will not be a problem. I am posting impages. I hope this would be helpful to you.

Hi, have you make it work with the 850 or change it to the 840? I'd been searching around and the only thing I found is a problem with the voltage. Thanks.

@emoticom No, I sent it back. I found a better method and site dedicated to the problem. Google "tarkan iflash"

Thank you @mark , the thing with 840 is that is difficult to find, and when you do is even more expensive than 850. Hope Tarkan make it work with other 1TB mSATA SSD.

Samsung mSata 1TB 840 EVO works a DC 3.3v and 1.9A and 1TB mSata 850 EVO works at the same voltage (3.3v) and 1.7A. Both of them works fine with iPod classic 7th generation with firmware 2.0.5.

I confirm evo850 500gb to work with ipod 5.5, I wish I could place the picture to not create confusion though..
