How easy is this to open? Just want to clean dust out.

I have an iMac G5 iSight and I looked at the guide on replacing the hard drive (to see how to open it) and it seems somewhat difficult, with the EMI shielding and all. Has anyone here bricked their iMac by opening it up?

This computer is a few years old and I'd like to clean the dust out with a can of compressed air to make it run a little better. I've successfully opened and re-assembled an Xbox 360 in the past successfully without problems.

So what I'm asking is, is it worth the trouble?

You loosen three screws in the bottom of the case housing frame and pop it open on all but the last G5. It just doesn't get much easier than that. Check the bottom of your stand to see which EXACT model you have. If it is indeed the A1144 then it's a good deal of trouble. I really don't like the clips at the top of the frame. They turned a 3 minute job into an hours labor. But they still need to be cleaned out. Just do your hard drive upgrade at the same time.

Just checked, it's the A1144. How much of an adventure am I in for?

It is an adventure if it doesn't want to play fair. I have had ONE that came apart and the clips released with no issues. The rest have been a bear to get the clips to release without deforming. Then you have to unwrap the shielding inside. Just be patient and use good static practices.

its really not that bad. i thought it was gonna be a nightmare for me to replace the cpu fan. being a windows person, but it was cool. just dont be nervis, just relax and read the book on how to seperate the imac. i love repairing these now, its fun.

mayer: just a word of wisdom here for you; maybe you already know this, maybe not. those clips at the top are a super annoying pain, until i realized you can pop them off with a credit card through the vent on the back. way easier!
