My motherboard seems to be overheating and throttling my APU. When I aim a fan towards the VRM the throttling decreases dramatically. Is this due to poor airflow or is the motherboard too weak for my APU thanks.

Just a few thoughts here. Are you liquid cooling your apu . How big is the processor ? What processor are you using ? AMD processors usually don't require that much power and and as a rule run cool. Ok if your running a liquid cooling kit you will need to put heat sinks on the VMRs which are split into an L shape on this board. Usually the exhaust from the processor fan is enough to cool them but with a liquid cooler theres no fan on the board. If you are running a fan cooler does it vent to the side where the VMRs are or is the heat sink directing airflow away. Adding fans is never a bad Idea air flow is always good. Hows your cable management make sure there tucked away neatly to maximize airflow . Hope this helps

Thanks for the replies. I'm not water cooling and my APU is the A10 7870K. My CPU cooler is really small and doesn't really cover the VRM. Unfortunately my case is quite small and I only have 1 92mm fan

Since you are air cooling I'd bet they just need heat sinks or a single heat spreader (just a big heat sink to sit across them). The sink will pull the heat into the tines and the natural air flow of the case will do the rest.

It sounds like your motherboard was designed to have a heat spreader across the VRMs. You might consider picking some up. They don't cost much and come in handy.

I've built a few different APU systems and they don't typically have issues in small cases, even with small fans. I'd bet you really do just need a heat sink for them. You can always try pulling the spreaders off an old board (even a GPU board will sometimes have these that you can salvage) and possibly fix them for free. Just make sure you don't damage anything by accidentally shorting the contacts.
