Logic Board or Screen failure?

Hi,

I'm considering buying a broken MacBook Pro 15" Retina Mid 2014.

The seller claims he dropped a book on the screen which caused the display to go "half-bad", although I'm wondering if this problem could also be due to a hardware failure within the logic board. Any input is appreciated, please see attached picture for clarification.

Cheers /V

Hook it up to an external monitor to help isolate the issue.

UPDATE

If it drives an external monitor, the logic board should be good. The problem is the cost of the display. Here's how to replace it: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro... Here's the part: https://www.ifixit.com/Store/Mac/MacBook...

The user have tried connecting it through HDMI and that works good.

He thinks its just the screen thats partially broken, but do you think this kind of issue could also be associated with internal logic board failure?
