Domanda Chiusa

logic board getting very hot. idling at 90'c.

I was given a mac book pro 1278 early 2011 with an i5 processor.

Unfortunately it runs very hot ( around 90'c) whilst idling. I've checked and the fan is free of dust and spinning without a problem. I've also isolated the heat source to be eminating from the logic board as every other component is perfectly cool.

I took it to the mac store and they said it may be the hard drive as it was about to fail.

Yet this makes no sense? Firstly I replaced the hard drive with a brand new one as the 320 was too small and I can't see how a faulty hard drive can make the logic board overheat?

I will attempt to replace the heat paste. But will that make much of a difference?

I have a customer with the exact same machine. I have replaced the hard drive, also it has burned up the HD/IR cable twice. It continues to run hot. I have recommended sending it in to Apple for a "Flat Rate Repair". Cost in Texas with tax and shipping is $357.00. If that does not fix the issue it then goes back to Apple under the repair warranty until they do fix it. I believe it will take a logic board replacement and is a factory defect. If there is ever a class action law suit on this one, Apple will be required to refund the repair costs.
