How to realign blu-ray dirve

I had a YLOD problem. Before I eventually fixed it, I made the mistake of going into the blu ray drive and pulling out the disc that was stuck inside.

I think that this screwed with the ability of the drive to draw in discs like it normally does. What steps should I follow to properly reset this and get it to take in discs?

I have done the method where you unscrew one of the gears and that snaps everything back into place, but that doesn't seem to be all that I need to do. What position do the "arms" need to be in, for instance?

I have found that it is easiest to re-align the drive in the unloaded position.The "arms" (on which the rubber wheels are mounted) need to complement the position of the lens.

Unscrew the plastic piece on which the arms are mounted, and you can move the gears manually. You will notice that there are two pins that raise up when the lens is in the reading position. You should align the mechanism so that these pins are laying flat. You can then re-attach the arm board without having to move the arms into any special position.

Plug the console in, and turn it on. The gears should start spinning. If they do not, press the eject button. If that checks out, place the top half of the blu-ray drive back on the drive, and try inserting a disk. If it goes in, your good to go. If it makes a horrible crunching sound, you will have to go and try again.

I have re-aligned several Blu-Ray drives, and each one has been a little different. Try a couple combinations of ejecting, powering on and off, and tripping the sensor, both with and without the arms attached.

Best of luck, let us know how it works out.

This is much appreciated.

+ For an answer backed with plenty experience. Unfortunately, I have been present to hear the horrible crunching sound when it didn't work.

I finally sat down to fix my whole PS3. The disc clicked just as you stated, and "Viola!" it works. I went from no PS3 to back in business. I hope to never have to do this again. :)

In the future, replace the disc with a blank or dummy disc. I get dummy discs from spindles of blank discs sold in cakebox packages (the clear ones on the top and bottom of a stack of blanks). I'm about to do that myself and I'll let you know how it goes!

== Update ==

Well, when I removed the screws I wasn't ready to lift the top off but it all kinda popped out before I could take note of where everything was positioned. When putting it back together, I slid my dummy disc into the top piece with the magnetic hub removed. I had to move a small part to free a piece that the disc is supposed to move (the part was locking it). Once it was in position, I stuck my finger in from the top to hold the disc by the hub. There are white spring-loaded plastic parts which lift the magnetic hub when closed which I could not get to stay all the way open unless I spread them before putting it all back together. I'm not sure that they are supposed to be all the way open, but I can't test until I get my PS3 back from getting the BGA chip reballed. I'll certainly update then. At least I seem to have my disc out and replaced it with a dummy disc to avoid "alignment" problems (hopefully).

Is there like a video or better explanation like what wheels ? And arms ?
