3DS XL black screen

I have been entrusted with a cousin's 3ds xl that is no longer under warranty. The top screen is still back lit but blank when the system is turned on. The bottom screen works and displays content clearly. Most searches present repairs for the regular 3ds, but I am unsure if the same applies to the XL? I am prepared to open the device and follow instructions.
