iMac 21.5" 2009-2011 VESA Mount adaptor

Hello everyone,

I have been the happy owner of a mid 2011 21.5" iMac and would love to have this computer mounted to the wall using a VESA mount. I always assumed this would be a straightforward using the kit that Apple sells. This unfortunately is not possible as many sources on the internet already mention. I have also found that there are a couple of mounts that you can attach to the stand and mount it to the wall. I for one am not a big fan of these add-on mounts and would like to create a solution.

My "solution" would be partially disassembling the computer in order to remove the stand and replace that stand with a custom part which can connect to a VESA wall mount.

I am therefore looking for someone who would happen to have a 21.5" iMac stand lying around of the 2009, 2010 or the 2011 model (OEM part # 922-9796 ) and would like to share its dimensions in order to replicate the stand to a VESA mount. Something like this for example: http://thumbs3.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/m...

Using these dimensions, a CAD drawing can be made and have it machined somewhere. If the part fits, I would be happy to share the CAD design files.

I am aware that this might not be the easiest solution but I do believe that it will be a sleeker solution than the add-on VESA mounts.

Best regards!

I don't think you have to go that far :-)

Here's the needed VESA kit for your system: VIvo VESA Mount Adapter Kit for iMac, LED Cinema, Apple Thunderbolt Display. We have a few on arms.

The newer 'Thin Series' iMac's changed things which is what I believe you are referencing. Only the 27" is available to be purchased with the mount already present (can't be added later).

That would be great but I'm afraid this won't fit the 21.5" iMac. The product information on Amazon says it fits the 24" and 27" iMacs but for the 21.5" they refer to their stand add-on mount. Since the Vivo adaptor also has 9 screw holes and the 21.5" only has 7 I believe this would not fit. Thank you however for looking into this :-)

I'll checkout how it was done in the morning.

Super, I'm very keen on hearing about how it was done. Thanks in advance!

My bad, they are 24" iMac's. Sorry :-(

No problem, I was hoping it would work.

Can some help me with the CAD drawings to connect iMac 21.5" to VESA adapter. I have no other choice to fabricate them.

Thanks

Can't offer you a CAD drawing as Apple doesn't offer them, and I don't think anyone has transcribed from the part a set of drawings.

But! I can give you the P/N for the foot so you can order one to either modify or take the needed measures to create your own CAD drawings.

HI, We are stuck with a problem to fix 30 iMacs 21.5" ( already purchased) to fix to a Vesa mount on table. We can get the adhesive strip in see the Mac and we have tools to open the new iMac, but the aluminium mount is the issue. If we know the exact dimensions, we can get it fabricated in a CNC machine. Still looking for help on the exact dimensions

@subra217 - This Q was on the older 21.5" iMac's which is what the answer is on.

If you are asking about a newer 'Thin Series' iMac ('12 and newer) that is a very different problem! Sadly, there is no means to mount these to a VESA mount by replacing the foot with a VESA mount.

The design of this series would require you to completely tear the system down as the mounting for the foot assembly are under the logic board. It's just not practical to try to retrofit a custom assembly here. Besides, its more than just a foot, it would require a new hinge and spring assembly as well.

The only solution I've seen is a bracket that mounts though the cable hole to a bracket to then mount to the VESA system. Here's what I would get: iMac Mount - iMac VESA Mount Adapter Kit
