How to remove the speaker grid.

Hello.

I need to repair the speakers of a Harman Kardon Go + Play, but I can't to remove the grid in front of them.

I read in some web site that simply pull the grid gently, but I haven't success.

Can anyone give me some tip?

Best regards and thank you.

If you just push it out from the inside it will come off but you will also dent the mesh a little bit. I did it this was as the speaker material in my unit flaked melted into petroleum residue over time (I live in taiwan where it gets very hot).

I have tried to push the speaker from the inside , with the unit open from the bottom. But looks like the speaker is glued to the main body. Impossible to remove without breaking the unit. Can someone send pictures of how to push ?

Hi,

Here are two links which may help you.

This shows a Harman Kardon Go + Play Micro dis-assembly. It might be the same for the Go + Play.

Hi Jayeff, thanks for tour answer.

I knew these posts, but they aren't useful.

There is another post (on Fixya) where says is easy, just pull out with some screwdriver.

I tried, but no way.

I will keep trying.

Again, many many thanks four your kindness.

Regards.

PS: Sorry about my English. I'm from Argentina.

Hi @beto, i´ve the same problem ... Finally, How did you remove de grid ?

da

Beto and megagod, I have the same problem, still do not know how to remove Grid, triedfrom the front with a screw driver and small kniffe but I am scared to damage the grade, dis you guys succeed ? Thanks

Yes I did.... with minimal damage to the grills... Mine is 2009 Go + Play I just pulled the magnets from them ( As the speakers are damaged anyway ? ) Got a flat Heavy in weight screwdriver ( with the end taped to prevent damage ) with the whole unit facing down on a soft surface grills on soft surface ! ... Push as close to the edge as possible ... they will come out ... I Also used a hair dryer around them first to make them hot >> I think this helped ..

Heat up the grill with a hair dryer and then use a tool like a dental pick to pull on it. I just did one and it worked.

push from inside through broken speaker towards the edges with a flat topped screw driver , the grill is very hard and not as soft as u think, really need to push hard to get it out, not much damage to the grill

you mean we push Through broken speaker , by totally destroying the broken speaker cone ? Mine needs just a suspension change , the cone is fine . Inreally don't want to make more damage to the speaker . Are you sure that is the only way ? Can you post a picture or two of that procedure ?

I think he is suggesting you guide the screwdriver through the damaged surround. I havent taken mine apart yet but from the sound of it if its flexible glue I might try getting a box cutter in there and cutting around the glue they used to fasten the driver... or if its hard glue a small sharpened putty knife struck lightly with a hammer.

Try putting a bit of electrical tape on the tip of the screwdriver even a little might keep the grille from being damaged. That said I have successfully replaced many speaker surrounds even if you can source 3" rings with the correct size and angles its difficult to do it right with the speaker mounted. The old surround and its glue needs to be completely removed with solvent (only use MEK on a paper/pulp driver and for heavens sake with proper ventilation) and application of the new adhesive requires full access to both sides at once. Let alone alignment of the cone/voice coil. If its crooked the driver is destroyed when played at volume. Repairing surrounds is a cheap and rewarding way of reviving old equipment but you can screw the job up in many ways. With a little experience its easy. My first job was a pair of infinity's flagship compositions prelude pf-r towers.... 12 drivers in all! $4000 towers found at goodwill for $150. $68 in parts and about a week of my spare time they were like new.

Hi Carlos - I imagine you have found a fix by now--but--if not: I removed the grill by taking out the tweeters from the inside. From there I used a thin flat electronics wrench to slide in there and act as a lever to push against the grill from the inside. This raised the grill enough to expose the screw-driver slots in the grill and from there use a small flat head screwdriver to work it off. As a note though: beware, the tweeters have strong magnets and draw metal objects into their cones.
