Is this possible to overhaul this MacBook? Is it worth it?

Macbook 13" Penryn 2.4 GHz

Recently, this laptop tried to die. Last Sunday morning it booted just fine, I used it for an hour, then shut it down (with charger on) and went to work, when I got home that evening it was dead except for the power light. Completely, no noise, no fan, no nothing, even with hard resets. I was helped by another question chain from someone having the same problem about 2 years ago.

Unplug external power, remove battery, let computer sit overnight, reinsert battery, plug into wall-socket and try to restart. The computer booted after a few minutes of being left plugged in. Then I ran disk utilities to verify and repair permissions. So far, the computer has been working just like it was before the Sunday episode. But I have no idea what went wrong with it or if it may happen again.

The only problems it's ever had prior to this is a heat issue (part of it because of where I live averages 85-90 degrees F.). That was being handled with coldpacks and lifting the laptop up on higher feet for better airflow. The other being the airport card behaving erratically as of 4 months ago, but that problem was sidestepped by an ethernet cable.

This is an old laptop, but I'm fond of the beast. Is it possible that replacement parts can restore it to "newish" condition. It's still got all of the factory parts, so what would be the recommendations to overhaul this laptop? I want to switch to an SSD hard drive, because that might help the temperature issues. But is it worth it, or should I bite the bullet and get a newer machine?

Update (03/23/2016)

Update time. Due to a lot of RL things happening I was very behind in getting what I needed to do this repair, but I performed the hardware repair today. Now there's a new problem.

I ordered the 1 TB SSD Hybrid 2.5" Hard Drive as recommended and I ordered the thermal paste replacement kit. The repair went well, the inside of the machine was blown out with compressed air and everything was reconnected according to the guide.

When I plugged the power adapter back in the computer at first wouldn't respond and behaved exactly like it did in the first post I made about the problem. I disconnected the ac power and removed the battery and let it sit aside for about 2 hours. Then I connected the ac again and the green power light came on, after a couple of minutes the machine booted, and showed a gray screen with a ? in a folder. I shut the laptop off by holding the power button and went to the installing OSX guide to get it to install Snow Leopard.

The laptop went through all of the steps needed in that guide, including where I needed to partition then erase one partition so that the new drive would be formatted correctly. That worked and Snow Leopard began to install. The installation screen said it had 23 minutes left and I got up and went away from the desk for about five minutes. When I came back the screen was black, there was no fan sound and the light in the lower right corner was off. I powered the laptop back on again, it went to a grey screen looked like it was starting to boot, but then shut off again,

It's now stuck like that, it begins to boot, I hear the fan start, the cd drive begin to work and the grey screen will pop-up, then it will shut off again. I have not been able to boot into safe mode because regardless of what I do, it will begin to boot, reach the grey screen for about 20 seconds then shut off again.

Please give us the last three figures of the serial number. Is it losing the date and time? Have you opened it and cleaned the fans and vents? Maybe time for a thermal paste replacement and new hard drive and battery. Once I know your exact machine from the serial number I'll see if there are guides for you.

The last three numbers are 0P2 (from W88220G90P2). It is not loosing the date or time. I have not opened it for any fan cleaning (leery of doing so without a strong reason, since the last time I did, resulted in wriggly spacebar key). The battery was changed 2 years ago, from the factory original that started to swell but did not rupture (the change was to an other Apple battery).

You really need to bite the bullet and open it up. Remove the fan and clean the vent out and blow it out with canned air. I would not go with an SSD, go with a hybrid SSHD. Here's how: MacBook Core 2 Duo Fan Replacement

y either the 1 TB or a 500 GB SSHD like this: [prodotto collegato mancante o disabilitato: IF107-122-1]

Thank you for the guide and kit links, that was really what I needed to see.

Perhaps you can help me on another front, I might also want to upgrade the memory while I'm in there. It currently has the info says this about the Memory: 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM . Would you advise adding a 4 GB RAM chip PC2-5300 4 GB RAM Chip to what I have?

And given what may be the problem, do you recommend a thermal paste replacement as well?
