strongsbpi, possible. Remember that most laundry detergent use Sodium Silicate and/or Sodium Sulfate which be its nature are corrosive. So you know that you are in a bit of a time crunch. Corrosion will start by the time you removed your phone from the wash. To inhibit this, you could keep it in water as previously suggested by somebody else and/or keep it in the fridge as well. If you are tech savvy and would like to try to fix it yourself vs. contracting it out. I suggest that you start with this.
The very first thing you want to do is to not try to restart/sync the phone. This may further damage your phone. The next thing to do is to clean it. Disassemble your phone using these guides. You must remove all the EMI shields of the logic board. If you do not remove those you are not cleaning 3/4 of the board. Clean everything with +90% (no less than 90%) isopropyl alcohol. Follow this guide, and even so it was written for a 3G all the points are still pertinent to your phone. Pay particular attention to the SMD components, check for charred missing or broken missing. You can then dry the board in an oven or equivalent at 220deg F (not higher;-) for a few hours. Best way to clean it would of course be through an ultrasonic cleaner. Consider professional help with that When it is properly cleaned, you must replace the battery. All these steps are to avoid delayed failure caused by corrosion. Once all this is done, reassemble your phone and reevaluate.
No matter how well an instructional video is made and no matter who makes it, it is not the gospel of how to do things. Remember that there are multiple ways to accomplish a goal.

Here at ifixit the emphasis is I fix it. With that said Do not power on the phone . take the phone apart using the guide
Clean ever connection with a soft toothbrush. As well clean the logic board use a 99% isopropal alcohol for all cleaning. now is the time to start drying out the phone. Set the screen in a desiccant or silica gel leave it in for several day moving it from time to time to get the max effect from the desiccant . use a blow dryer on a low heat setting to dry the rest of the phone. replace the battery with a new one consider the old ones done. Clean again with isopropal alcohol let dry and when you think everything is clean and dry reassemble the phone (make sure to clean the contacts on the screen after removing from the desiccant). Once you've reassembled the phone its time to power it on. Hold your breath and hope for the best.

Here in the answers forum, the focus is on answering the person's question. Strongsbpi asked if their phone was ruined. The answer is: Probably. Doing things like drying the phone out in silica or with a blow dryer will only make things worse unless the person with this issue has the proper tools to fix the damage that was done. A proper ultrasonic cleaner, soldering iron and microscope are needed to fix the problem. I'm not quite sure how offering poor advice translates to telling someone how to fix an issue. Powering up a phone before it has been properly cleaned and inspected is telling them how to ruin their phone.
But please don't take my word for it. Let's see what I fix it has to say about water damage:

Please do not dry the phone out before taking it to a repair shop.
Believe it or not, washing machines are not the worst case scenario for a phone. Its usually the dryer that kills them :D The best thing to do is take it to a reputable repair shop in your area will they will thoroughly clean and inspect all the components. DO NOT TURN THE PHONE ON! Power is your enemy at this point. You want the phone to remain wet if possible to avoid corrosion as much as possible.

iPhone went inside a front load washing machine with a full load of clothes and a wash for an hour.
When I found it in the machine, I did not turn it on. I took the phone out and shook it to remove excess water. Towel dried and I placed it inside a ziplock bag with rice since it was the only thing available at the moment. This happened Saturday afternoon.
On Sunday, we bought silica gel packets. We moved the iPhone to a new ziplock and surrounded the phone with the gel packets.
I opened the bag with silica gel packets on Wednesday (72 hours after) and turned on the phone. It worked!
I had a warranty for the phone (wet or stolen) and they sent me a new iPhone. We are in the process of moving all the data and contacts to the new iPhone, but it has been working fine since Wednesday night.
This method works if you are lucky and the damage was not that bad. Our screen did not suffer or cracked.
Once an iPhone has been that wet, it is better to replace it: eventually some parts or the battery will degrade very fast in a few months. It is nice to have the chance to recuperate your data and erase the phone to factory settings before returning it to the warranty company.

I just took my phone out of the washing machine. It's been in there for 10 minutes. It wouldn't turn on so I immediately put it in a bag of rice. It had a glitched screen (black with colored bars) for 2 seconds and it went away. It hasn't done anything since then. I've completely covered it with rice and stood it up so the water can drain. I don't think there is a way to turn the phone off because the screen is all black.

I was at the laundry and decided to wash my winter coat, so took it off loaded it with the rest of my laundry and washed for 25minutes. while I was off loading my laundry for the dryer, discovered I had left my iPhone6 in the pocket of my coat! screen/screen protector had a couple of cracks....I sat in my car dried it off with a towel and then with the car heater for 30min. This morning I put it in a bag of rice, will try 24hours before I try a repair store and then will be back for a feed back. fingers crossed...(note I never turned it on)

Go to a hardware store and buy silica gel bags. Buy enough so they can be all around the phone that you put in a Ziplock bag. Take the air out of the back. Seal it and do not open it for 4 days. The phone should be dry by then. Our iPhone worked fine after. I turned it on and it worked fine without the need of taking it to a repair shop.
And what happened to your phone? Did it work?
