Fridge only cools with condenser fan disabled

Came home from holidays and noticed the sides of my dual temperature wine fridge were very hot, it was still keeping temperature though. Opened the back and noticed the condenser fan was not working when the compressor started.

Replace the AC to DC adapter to the fan and it started working but now the fridge only cools to around 15C/59F in both compartments, just a few degrees different between the two compartments and it gets hotter depending on the external temperature.

I disconnected the condenser fan, after an hour the fridge compartments had reached the set temperatures, 15C/59F for the lower red wine compartment and 8C/46F for the white wine compartment. Of course the sides are hot again and the compressor is running extremely hot. Other than that it seems to operate ok with the fan disabled.

This fault doesn't make sense to me, what could possibly be wrong? I can't see the evaporator fan without further disassembly.

Hi,

Can you hear the evaporator fan running? It should be running to get the temp down to the desired level.

Hi Jayeff, it's impossible to tell as there are two fans inside the fridge making noise, one for each compartment. I presume the evaporator fan is inside the fridge somewhere not easily accessible.

Hi,

What make and model is your wine fridge? Also are BOTH fans running or only one?

Hi,

This link may be of interest to you as it details some checks you can make and give you some insights re cooling in fridges (principle should be the same for wine fridge) Also I think that your compartment fans may form the evaporator fan function i.e run to draw cold air into each compartment until temp reached. Hope it helps https://fridgeman.wordpress.com/2008/06/...

Thanks jayeff, discovered that a fan inside the bottom compartment was not going, this fan sucks air and there are vents below it, I assume it blows air over the evaporator coils and the cold air comes out the bottom vents in the compartment. Getting one step closer to a fix...
