Why is my MacBook Freezing up?

At random times my mid 2012 13 inch MacBook Pro will freeze up, with 5 sets of dual horizontal lines about an inch and half wide showing. If I'm plugged in and unplug, the computer shuts down immediately. If I'm running on battery power, I have to close the top and it takes about ten to twelve seconds for it to shut down. It makes a static-y clicking/popping sound for that ten seconds, then shuts off. I can then restart.

This happens at apparently random times. I'm not hitting the track pad or any specific key, and it has happened while I'm not even touching the unit. I have a photo of the screen if that might help anyone diagnose the issue. It is starting to happen more often now. Any ideas?

By chance did you get your system wet at some point? I think you'll need to pop open the bottom cover and make a good inspection.

It has not gotten wet at all, that I can recall. I did max out the ram about a year ago. Makes me wonder if I left a cable loose or something.

I have two theories, the first one is dead LCD cable, and the second one is a Microcrack in the motherboard.

A microcrack in the motherboard can result in stuttering, and goofy stuff in more advanced stages. Removing the Heat Profile kext would make the mac stop throttling itself, this may solve the problem!

1. Boot into your OS

2. Go to About this mac under the apple in the upper left and click on More info

3. Click on system report

4. make a note of what it says after Model Identifier

5. go to your master drive – System -Library – Extensions – IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext -Contents – Plugins – ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext – Contents – Resources – find the name from step 3 and move it to a folder that you can find again if needed.

6. Restart and you’re done

The first time I encountered a Macbook with James' exact symptoms, it took a long time to solve the riddle! I tried everything! I took it to the Apple Store in Los Gatos for advice, and they ran an Apple Service Diagnostic on it. The motherboard was in need of repair; it's $400ish, yikes.

The tech explained to me that Macs have heat profiles to govern the speed of the machine and the cooling. When a motherboard sustains enough damage to make things fail but not bad enough to kill the machine, the kext tells the motherboard resorts to the "HOT HOT HOT!" mode, even if it's not hot. This means throttling, stuttering, etc.

Removing the heat profile makes the Mac rely on a default set of sensible cooling parameters instead.

--- Two more times I would encounter this problem, the technique listed above solved the problem. My sample size is only 3, so I wouldn't use it to end world hunger or anything, but it could very well apply here. :)

Could be a lot wrong with the laptop, but the slowness and video issues I have seen as a result of improperly seated or malfunctioning RAM. The power issues could just be an underlying battery issue which shouldn't be causing video issues or slowness. But then again, it could also be a bad logic board doing some funky stuff. With this many issues, I would take it to somewhere with apple certified tech's who can run diagnostics on the laptop to narrow the issue down. That's the first thing that I do with MBP's with this many problems as it's hard to tell what is causing what.

Why the Ram, no beep tones? Why mention the battery if it "shouldn't be causing video issues or slowness"? What diagnostics will they (Apple certified tech) run that you can't tell them how to do? This is a DIY site not a "take it to a professional site". Help the guy if you can. If you can't, don't answer questions.
