Recovery options are different across L300 models. An exact model number would be helpful. If you don't have the User Manual you should be able to download one from Toshiba's website here & then read the instructions for the recovery options. Perhaps you're missing an important step or keystroke and that's why you're encountering the error:

Are you running Windows? Or another operating system?
At which point in the recovery process are you receiving this error?
Did you make recovery discs for your system? Or does the system have a recovery partition on the hard drive that you're trying to restore from?
Make sure the BIOS is set to boot first from the device you're wanting to use to recover with...i.e. CD, external, floppy, or USB. Either enter the BIOS manually before Windows loads (possibly by pressing F2 or ESCAPE. Watch for the "Press ** for Setup" message right when you start up) or press F12 for boot options and set it to whatever drive you're using to recover if using your own disc or USB drive.
Another option is using the F8 menu, if available. But again it depends on your specific model whether or not a repair option will be listed.
More details on your system and when the error occurs would help.
