No sound from speakers/headphone. sound from Bluetooth/HDMI

I have had this problem for awhile and thought I would check here to see if anyone else has this issue.

Mid 2011 iMac 21.5"

No internal sound board shown in settings

No sound through internal speaker or headphones

I do get sound from bluetooth connected speakers or if I connect through Thunderbolt to HDMI.

I thought this is weird because if the sound card is blown on the logic board why do I get sound via Bluetooth and HDMI??

Thoughts/Suggestions?

Just to be sure here:

You have opened the Sound Preference panel and you don't see the Internal Speakers - Built-In listed under the Output tab. Also make sure the Balance & output Volume settings are correctly set (try the middle for both slides). Try resetting the PRAM. Do you get a Bong when starting the system? Lastly, make sure your OS is up to date.

You might want to try replacing the Audio Cable 922-9801 as the jack maybe damaged if you see the entry in the sound control panel. If not then you likely have a bad Amp or CODEC.

As far as why Bluetooth works here: The Audios digital signal stays digital and is transmitted to the Bluetooth speaker which has it's own digital to analog (D/A) logic. The internal speakers use the iMacs digital to analog (D/A) logic. In this case the logic is both digital to analog as well as analog to digital for the microphone input.

You are correct...there is no entry to internal speaker under output sound settings. Also no input selection for the onboard mic. I have reset PRAM and taken to Genius Bar where they said that my sound board must be bad, but that didn't make sense to me as I get sound from Bluetooth and HDMI. They did not open up the unit. I might take a look to see if I could locate the cable.

Yes, I follow you are still puzzled why Bluetooth & HDMI still get sound though when the onboard DAC & Amp have failed. Think of it this way someone calls you on the phone you pickup the phone yet it fails. But you have a second phone and manage to pick it up and you can speak & hear the person calling you. The fact the 1st phone failed doesn't stop the other phone from working! This is the same case here, the sound in its digital form can be played via the internal DAC & Amp to the built-in speakers or it could stay in its digital form and be transmitted to a different device in this case the Bluetooth speaker or via the HDMI cable to your TV where the digital data is then converted back into sound via the other devices speakers (though the other devices DAC & Amp).
