laptop display so dim almost cant see the display, went reddish and only stayed on for a few seconds. Now not at all. Bulb or inverter?

Cathode, definitely.
You could replace with a really fine diameter led strip but most likely easier to buy a new screen.

I have time and ability but not money.
Led strip sounds very interesting. Would it work for MY laptop? If so where do I get one and how do i know which is the right one for me?
Also, how much does a replacement bulb costor inverter cost and where do get them cheapest?

The thin diameter strip is a specialist part, meaning it will cost. Realistically you could buy an lcd screen online usually for less than €50. You will pay around that for the led kit anywhere.
If it were desktop screen it would be worth the exercise modding it for led's but laptop screens generally have very limited space under the metal covers.
If you want to try and find replacement cathodes or an led replacement the site that seems to cover all that is lcdparts.net, it isn't cheap though.
