How do I remove a Playstation 3 antenna?

I own an original USA launch unit 60GB PS3. It was manufactured November 2006. This is a very strange request as I don't see anyone anywhere asking about it. I need to know if it is possible to permanently remove the Bluetooth and wifi radios from this unit. And if removed will the unti still function as a game console normally without the radios? I'm more concerned with removing the wifi from this unit. If my wireless controllers will be affected and if that is part of the Bluetooth then it can stay. I've seen tutorials that show a wifi antenna wire. Does removing that wire manually disable wifi? Or does the whole circuit board have to be removed? And once the board is removed can the PS3 still function as a gaming machine? I hope someone can help me. It's a necessity that I permanently remove wifi from this unit. Disabling wifi in the settings is not an option. Thanks in advance.

If you want to completely remove the Wi-fi Antenna, you should use this guide. I am not sure if that will completely remove all wifi capabilities, as the Wi-fi chip is mounted to the Wireless board, and may still receive some signal. You could give it a shot, and see if you still get wifi.

If you would like to remove the wireless board, you should use this guide. Removing the wireless board will remove wifi capabilities and still enable gameplay, however, you will not be able to use a controller wirelessly, as the Bluetooth chip and the wireless chip are on the same board. If you are willing to play via charge cable, then that would be the surest way to remove Wi-fi capability.

I do not believe that transplanting the wireless board from a 20GB PlayStation 3 will work, as i know that you cannot transplant a 60GB wireless board to a 20GB.

Good luck, and let us know how it works out.

Someone who did put a 60GB wireless board into a 20GB unit seemed to suggest that the board worked (for bluetooth), but did not add wireless capability. Of course, this doesn't tell us what happens when you try to do the reverse. The question is does the unit fail to boot when it can't find the wifi chip, or does it ignore the problem and continue? No one seems to have tried this.

I have booted 60GB PS3s without the Wi-fi board attached. Of course, I had the controller plugged in and wireless capabilities were gone, but the system worked fine.

OMG!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I am so glad this was posted as it helped me do it myself.

You might try swapping the bluetooth + wifi board with that from the 20GB PS3, which has bluetooth but not wifi. I don't know if the 60GB PS3 will function without it, however. Of course, you could just swap the entire PS3 for a 20GB unit, and you'd be set. Bluetooth is required for the controllers to work.

Tou can just disable onternet access & removing bluetooth will disable you for playing wirelessly with your controller but it can still be played by USB charging cable

Disabling from the menu does not remove all incoming internet connection. The system still loads it's advertizements and has an active internet connection in the background. What he is looking for is a mechanical disable of the wifi system. The problem is a partial wifi signal that is not yours being used by the system even though there is no physical eithernet connection. Games freeze, the system locks up and all sorts of mayhem because of this.

I have a similar issue with this console, I have no hard wired interned and a very spotty public wifi that the console tries to connect to. This spotty connection makes for a nightmare situation If you are in the middle of a game and the console sees some connection and then loses it just as quickly. The console even tries to download it's updates and ads in the background without your permission even with the software switch set to disable internet connection. You can always try to just disconnect the antenna's to the bluetooth board and try starting the machine to see if your signal from the controllers is strong enough to still work.
