How to choose the correct brand hard drive

Hello,

I am in the process of replacing a hard drive on a friends iMac. I have looked over the forums, but can't seem to find an exact answer to my question. I noticed that when I went to the hard drive section compatible with the iMac ECM 2390, there are three different hard drive brands compatible with the computer. In the info under the hard drive, it mentions that to ensure compatibility, you must purchase the same brand hard drive that was in the computer before the replacement. Is there any sure way to find out the brand of hard drive I currently have in the computer before taking it apart? I can certainly take it apart to find out, I just don't want to do anything unnecessary.

Thank you in advance for your help.

If your friends iMac is still running you could look at the About This Mac >> System Report Then look under the Storage Heading under Physical Drive Media Name: copy it and Google it to get the drives specs. If it's not running you'll need to open the system to find out.

As to requiring the same manufactures drive well Yes & No here.

The issue is the thermal sensor within the drive is different between the venders Apple uses. So Apple needed to create different sensor cable per the different manufactures.

The easiest way is to use the same manufactures drive or if you wish to use something else you'll need to swap-out the sensor cable. Here's the cables per manufacture:

  • 922-9223 - Hitachi
  • 922-9224 - Seagate
  • 922-9225 - Western Digital
  • 922-9628 - HDD sensor jumper for SSD only configs

Lastly, here is the IFIXIT guide for your system: iMac Intel 27" EMC 2390 Hard Drive Replacement.

As to what would be a good drive to replace the current drive. I would recommend going with a SSHD hybrid drive which has a deep SSD cache. This will improve boot up time and often used apps.

Thank you for your help. Unfortunately it is running, but about this Mac is greyed out and inaccessible. I will go ahead and pull out the old drive to make sure I get the correct brand without replacing the thermal sensor. Thanks again.
