phone works but touch screen is unresponsive after water damage.

I dropped just the top of my phone in water and it immediately went black. I soaked it in rice for 24 hours and it still wouldn't turn on. I brought it to a repair place where they cleaned it etc. They were able to get it to turn on, but I can't use it because the screen does not respond to my touch. They said it's a malfunction of the digitizer and for some reason there was nothing they could do. Is there any way to fix this? The screen isn't cracked or anything, the display is fine. If I replace the digitizer with one of your kits, should that fix the problem? What else can I do?

Thank you.

I'd suggest to call the shop to verify they tried another screen which I'd assume they did. When dealing with water damage most of the times is not only swapping parts out but actually working on the logic board. Rice is not helpful at all. Next time (hopefully there won't be) take it to a shop that can clean the board throughly right after the accident to avoid corrosion. A good shop should de solder all the shields on the motherboard and clean preferably with an ultrasonic cleaner.

Hi Israel, thanks for reaching out. I doubt they replaced the screen simce they didnt charge me. But they said they cleaned everything. What do you suggest I do right now, since I don't plan on water damaging it again? Is there anything I can do to fix it, assuming the logic board has been cleaned but the screen jasnt been replaced?

da

I'd suggest to back up your phone if possible and take it to an Apple Store for a flat rate replacement

da

Ok thank you

da

I dropped mine in water then after a few minutes the screen didn't move when I touched it.

da

Someone told me to take the phone apart and make sure everything is dry.

Any legitimate independent repair shop would have tested your phone with a new screen and attempted to sell you a new screen to make your phone functional. This means that you likely have board damage at the digitizer connector or elsewhere as is common.

Your best bet after water damage on an iPhone 6 is the $299 out of warranty replacement at Apple.

Also, skip the rice, it makes it worse and delays proper treatment while the phone is still wet.

Ok, so you think they tried a screen and it didn't work? If I take my phone to apple they will offer me this deal? Thanks for your help!

da

Just came back from the Apple store and they offered me the deal...$299 for a refurbished 6. But I came home and for the !&&* of it plugged it in and it woke up...lines doen the screen and the touch screen isn't responding...actually showed the battery recharging...any further thoughts? The Genius Bar never tried to plug it in...took out the sim card though...asked him to put it back

da

yea i would say some damage to the female connector on the board for the digitizer

The only thing you can do with any phone is press home button and power button hold for 20 seconds and then it will turn black and then after it turns black it means it will work fine but if it doesn't just restart it and hopefully it will be fine or try plugging in the phone.

Solution #1: Plug the phone in

Solution #2: Put the phone in dry uncooked rice

Solution #3: Get a refund where you bought it but have a receipt for it if the store gives refund or coverage of phone damage

Solution #3: Sell it at a cellular device store they might repair it and sell it for exchange of money or another phone

Solution #4: Leave it in the sun for at least 24 hours at least or overnight

Solution #5: restart the whole phone

This is bad advice. Never put your phone in rice.

da

I agree totaly never put your phone in rice the time the phone is sitting in the rice the water in the phone is doing more damage

da

Hold home button and power button to restart solved now, hope the behavior of phone does not change with time.

da

Rice works if that's all you got but you need to be patient.

also to the comments saying "never put your phone in rice" why? if you are in the middle of the woods no store no nothing close is it still a bad choice?

You sound like you have a lot of experience braking phone in rice ? or? you just echo what the mods say.

Humans has been putting electrical devices in rice for many years its proven to work if you have not got anything better around.

saying never put it in rice is a brain dead comment just follow the leader baaaa (sheeps)

i had my HTC 1 in rice and my samsung galaxy 1 came out just fine both of them also nokia 8850 and so on always rice always works.

So my question is why DO you tell ppl to NOT do something that works just fine just because you hears someone say dont do it does not make it true.

its a fairly simple equation it's called "+" unboiled rice + water = ture

so if it is the water you want to get rid of how is this a bad thing to do ?

da

I’m sure you aren’t very keen how water works on electronics. Rice doesn’t really absorb moisture like you think it does with electronics. The starch that is in rice actually speeds up the corrosion process on the motherboard, which leads to things not working on the device, or complete device failure. It also kinda “suffocates” the phone, and doesn’t allow air to vent through the device.

The proper way to leave a phone that has been water damaged recently if you don’t know how to take it apart Is to immediately power it off, to avoid a short circuit on the board, sit it on a ventilated area, or out in the sun for a few hours if you are unable to take it to a Genius Bar.

So to answer your questions...

If you are in the middle of the woods, why do you just have a random bag of rice? The sun works better.

You mentioned your HTC 1, but you realize if it worked after you put it in rice, it would’ve worked even if you didn’t? Just because it worked for you doesn’t mean it’s 100% foul proof?

Why do we tell people not to do something that works just fine because we were told it doesn’t work? Because it DOESNT work, and it’s been tested, and were trying to save your device from corrosion destroying it.

3 possibilities:

1. dead touch connector on screen

2. dead touch connector on logic board

3. dead touch chips on logic board

try another LCD, try to clean gentry the connectors with alchol and a toothbrush. if doesn't work - take it to the service to change chips.

Im surprised it worked all you are doing is steaming your phone witch would make it worse.

Obviously your phone didnt have much if any water in it to begin with, and never place your phone in rice (big mistake).

If you can best idea is to take it to a dealer and have them take the back off and blow the water out with hot compressed air if possible or just pat dry with paper towel.

I had the same problem: Nokia 7 Plus, dropped into the toilet, the phone seemed to work except the touch screen did not respond to touch. I took it to a trustworthy repair shop (Fonum in Finland), and they had a look at it and said that it couldn’t be fixed.

However, my father-in-law insisted that if we soak it in isopropyl alcohol it would work (I think the idea is that isopropyl alcohol replaces the water, and eventually evaporates). As we didn’t have anything to lose we tried it out and it actually worked: the screen is now responding to touch, and the phone seems to work perfectly. The only downside is that the screen is now kind of messed up — looks like there are small amounts of liquid under the screen, and some other discoloring in parts of the screen — but I guess we could now replace it.

Thus, if you really need to get your phone working and nothing else works try to soak it in isopropyl alcohol. It will mess up your screen but it might make it responsive again. Note that we did this ~2 weeks after the water damage had occurred so you don’t need to try this as your first option.

****UPDATE****

A few days later, the screen is completely dead. The phone still works though (connects to a computer etc.)

Same problem! I dropped my phone in water at school about an hour ago. The phone is working, turning on and off, but the touch screen is not. I tried holding the home button and off button for 20 seconds. The phone restarted but the screen still doesn’t work. I still have about 6 hours left of school, and I’m afraid that if I wait that long my phone will be beyond repair. Any tips what I can do at school before it’s too late? PLEASE HELP!

I dropped my iPhone 6 in toilet. Next day I placed in zip lock bag with 4 silica gel sachets. Within 1 hour, it turned back on.

Update (11/18/2019)

It works ok. Do not put in rice or kitty litter-get the silica gel packets….as many as you can.

got all my data off the phone in case something happens.
