Crackling noise inside a MacBook Pro when I shake it

Hello, my MacBook Pro sounds like there's something inside when I shake it, it sounds like a piece is moving, but the rare thing is that the sound only appears when it's turned on.

If I move my computer the the left, the thing goes to the left. If I move it to the right, it goes to the right. Up and down too.

It hasn't fallen.

It's a MacBook Pro 13" Late 2011.

Edit: Now it's happening without shaking the computer, just using it. I think it might be a problem with the fan. Any thoughts?

I found this video on the Internet, I think this is what it sounds like:

You'll need to take the bottom cover off to see whats up here. It could be the fan or a loose screw. Just make sure to shake the system gently as you don't want to over do it and make sure to capture what falls out.

I already did that. I even disconnected the Hard Drive, but I couldn't get to see anything. It might be a loose screw, but I can't see it. Any thoughts?

Carefully disconnect the fan does that stop it? Don't run it too long without the fan though.

da

Hmm. How long?

Watch the video I posted. That's how it sounds.

Replacing the fan is not difficult. Since you opened the system it's just a few screws and a connector more.

But you'll need to give us your systems serial number (last four digits) so we can identify which model so we can give you the needed details on how to replace it and the needed part.

Sure you could go to the Apple Store as well. As long as it's a newer model they will fix it as well.

Are you sure it's the fan? I think it's the fan too, because the sound only comes up when the computer is on. I'll disconnect it again today and check if I see something wrong there. Otherwise, I'd have to change it.

The fan bearing is going so the fan blade is hitting the sides if the sound in the YouTube vid is the same as your sound.

The fan stopped working today. Macs Fan Control says it's working at 0 RPM. Will change it soon. Thanks for the help!

You could have been the cause here. Please don't use FanControl software to control the fan! What often happens is the software over drives the fan so it kills it. If you are using it as the system is running hot thats a good sign the system needs a good cleaning of dust and may need its old thermal paste cleaned off and fresh paste re-applied.

Hi there,

1. You probably shouldn't be shaking your MacBook Pro.

2. It's a 2011 model and quite old, little parts may have disconnected from general use over 4 years.

3. It's most likely the fan.

How ever if the laptop does malfunction (software) you should book a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple Store, as they may just replace it for you.

Thanks!

Will :)
