Oil Cap Popped off and spilled oil all over the lawnmower

Hello

We have a lawnboy lawnmower and today when we went to take it out of our garage the oil cap had popped off and oil was all over the top of the lawnmower. It happened after the last time we used the lawnmower while it was sitting in the garage. Any idea what could have caused this?
