Sounds like your systems HD has died.

Do you have an external bootable drive? If not do you have a friend that has a Mac. You'll need a USB Thumb drive (16GB or bigger). Using your friends Mac using Disk Utility delete the partition on the thumb drive and then setup a GUID partition map with a Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Then you'll need to download the OS installer from the App Store if you don't have a copy and then run the OS installer to install the OS onto your Thumb drive. Once done, Use it to boot up your Mac and then run Disk Utility to see if you can repair your internal drive.

If your Mac starts up to a flashing question mark but then doesn't continue starting up, try these steps.

  • Switch off Mac by press - holding the power button.
  • Now restart again by pressing the Power button. When Mac gives the startup sound, immediately press- hold the Command + R keys to bring up OS X Recovery.
  • If prompted, select a Wi-Fi network to connect to the Internet as part of startup.
  • After the Recovery screen appears, click the Apple menu and choose Startup Disk.
  • Select your startup disk, then click Restart.
