My PowerBook turns on, but nothing happens! The screen is black.

I purchased a new HD for my Powerbook G4, installed it using instructions on this site, and had the same problem that I've seen others post here - upon starting it up I got a Mac logo, then a question mark. I went back to Goodwill computers to take back the HD, and the associate informed that the reason why I was getting that was because my HD I purchased was blank! He told me to put it back in, and start up my Powerbook with the OS start up disk in it.

So, I re-installed this same HD, and when I turned on the computer, I got a few beeping noises, and then nothing. The screen remained black. I put the start up disc in, then shut the computer off and turned it on again (with the disc still inside). This should have installed the OS, but instead, nothing happened again, just a black screen.

I could hear the disc spinning inside.

Why, when I re-installed this HD that was working fine initially (unbeknownst to me)...why am only getting a black screen now?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks! I talked with a friend last night who fixes computers. He suggested the problem was with the RAM, not the new Harddrive. He suggested one of the sticks of new RAM that I purchased might be bad, and I should try putting just one stick in. When I took out one of the new sticks of RAM, and turned the computer on, it started right up! No beeps! But now I'm back to where I started - I see the old Mac folder icon flashing in the middle of the screen with a question mark.

I have the Leopard OS disc in the computer, starting it with the disc inside, but the disc doesn't seem to be doing anything to get rid of this flashing icon - and the disc wont eject.

Long story short, by leaving the new Harddrive inside and taking out one of the RAM sticks, I'm back to my original problem - my computer not doing anything except flashing that icon. At least I don't have a black screen anymore.

I hope to speak to my friend again tonight, but I'd still like to hear other's insight if they have any.

The key here is the beeping noises. First reseat the RAM. If the issue persists please describe the exact number and duration of the beeps.
