White screen on boot, no startup chime

My 13" MacBook Pro from mid-2010 (2.4GHz model) suddenly refused to boot up, and shows a white screen on startup.

The computer doesn't give the startup chime sound, there's no reaction when trying the alt key, the shift key, or any diagnostic mode key combination.

Also, I tried starting it up without the HD or the CD drive, still nothing. The only response i can get is from the Intel SMC upgrade system, if the power button is held longer, the power LED flashes.

The Genius Bar told me to replace the motherboard for half the price of a new Mac (!). Any ideas?

I'm suspecting the EFI ROM is corrupted. Would that be possible to reflash? Thank you!

Update (06/24/2015)

The computer seems to actually POST, as it beeps when there is no RAM inserted.

Also, is it normal that the backlight stays on when the lid is closed? The power status LED's responds by turning on when the lid is closed, but the backlight stays on.

Try starting from a known good internal or external hard drive with the old hard drive disconnected. The white screen usually indicates a hard drive issue. The "Genius" probably had three days of training. Suspect a bad hard drive cable resulting in a corrupted or destroyed hard drive on this model. I go with the 2012 cable for replacement.

Were you getting a gradually increasing beach ball for a while?

UPDATE 1/23/16

Apples charge for a Flat Rate Repair on a non-water damaged machine should be $357 including tax and shipping.

Thank you for your answer. I didn't have any beach ball issues, and the white screen doesn't show the "startup drive not found" icon either. I tried booting from an external drive, but it really looks like the EFI bootloader interface never shows up, and I also can't use a CD/DVD to boot. They tried network booting from their OSX bootserver at the Genius Bar, but it didn't work.

Did you disconnect the hard drive when trying to boot from the optical drive?

Tried both combinations, not working in either of the situations :(
