Pc will not boot - Black Screen after splash screen.

Hey

I've been running into some problems with my PC lately in regarding bootup.

Completely randomly, a week or two ago I switched my computer on and it gave me an 'insert bootable media' error. After restarting a couple of times and checking boot order, i still gotthe error but booted into a recovery drive and although it was not apparently able to fix my startup problem, on reboot it booted back into windows.

On next boot after that however and ever since then it loads into the motherboard splash screen just after bios and then either loads forever before black screening or promptly black screening. Whenever I try to boot from other devices it black screens and I have checked boot priority, reset bios, reset cmos and reseated most hardware components to no avail. Sometimes at random times it boots and says 'preparing automatic repair' before black screening again. Any ideas?

My specs are:

Windows 8.1

Asus A88xm plus mobo fm2+

Amd Athlon x4 860k

8gb crucial ballistix sport RAM

Sapphire Amd Radeon R9 270x

WD Blue 1TB HDD

Thanks

I have to say, at first blush, it sounds like a corrupted installation of Windows. The solution there would be to either run a repair, or to reinstall a fresh copy of your operating system. It could be simply software corruption, but don't rule out a hard drive on the fritz, or getting ready to die on you. Before you do much of anything, try to get a backup. If you have access to another computer, you can yank the hard drive from the non-functioning one and use one of these to plug in the hard drive and pull important data off before you delve into the world of troubleshooting.

When diagnosing issues that force the system to restart without any warning, your best bet is to start removing extraneous components and working backwards until you figure out what *does* work in a minimum system build. Remember MVP: Minimum Viable Product.

This can be time consuming, and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that there are kits available to thoroughly test the hardware if you have the money and time is at a premium.

If you'd rather invest the time, then start by removing the big offenders. Strip the system down to a single stick of RAM. Remove the video card. Disconnect the hard drive, and try to boot to external media (or a Linux Live build on CD/DVD/USB). Try to get the system to run for a period of time (or even stress, if possible) in order to reassure you that there aren't any hardware-related issues that need to be addressed. If you still fail with a single stick of RAM, try swapping that stick for one of the others you pulled out--you may just have stumbled onto the bad one.
