Fan replacement from older machines?

Hi,

just got a second-hand MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2008. I immediately recognized a "sounding" fan after starting the machine. Is it possible to use a fan from the previous model (MacBook4,1)? I still have that machine here (it died with that common main board prob).

TIA

Jochen

Unfortunately, that won't work. The Late 2008 is the first of the 15" Unibody MacBook Pros; the earlier generation used entirely different components. Regardez:

Early 2008 15" MacBook Pro (A1260, MacBookPro4,1)

Late 2008 15" Unibody MacBook Pro (A1286, MacBookPro5,1)

As you can see, there's no overlap in the part numbers; if you look at the fans themselves, they don't even look alike.

That said, within each group (Unibody and non-Unibody), you can pretty much swap fans around between laptops of the same size, regardless of the generations. The Mid-2009 Unibody 2.53GHz is an odd man out; it uses only a single fan, like the MBP 13" models. But all the other Unibody 15" models use the same fans, so you can salvage them out of whatever machine you can find.

Before replacement, you might want to try opening up the machine and cleaning whatever gunk the fans have collected over the last seven years (there's bound to be a bunch of stuff, especially if it lived in an environment with furry animals around). That alone may resolve the noise problem, without replacing a fan.

Great answer!

Thanks a lot for this detailed info.

I will ask the seller whether I should give it back or repair (by saving money).

Theres another thing: after restart, the DVD player is sounding several times (not once as usual) till the OS is announced on the screen. Could this be a hardware defect? I did the PRAM reset.

Start up holding down the trackpad button as you may have a disk in the drive.

a-HA! That's a clever point, mayer. Optical drives usually make a little noise on startup right around the time the screen lights up; they tend to get noisier as they fail.

Mayer: I tried - no disk inside. I have to add, this DVD-issue appears after starting AND after waking up.

I opened the machine ... unbelievable: a vacuum cleaner. But after cleaning, the issues still appear.

Sorry, got confused, should be a comment.
