SATA cable aka grey folder with question mark

Apple MacBook Air MC966LL/A 13"

I got the grey folder with question mark out of the sudden, when my mac didn't boot long time (apple logo and circle), and I kept switching it on and off. I did all that there was to be done in regard to easy fixes (command r, alt command r p, even making bootable new os on the usb, even pressing T and connecting to other imac).

-command +r (goes through internet recovery, shows utility, can't do anything though, can't verify disk0, nothing comes out in first aid)

- command+alt+p+r, just keeps rebooting and grey folder shows

- T on booting and connecting to imac through thunder cable (doesn't show anything in utilities on imac, can't even access data from my MBA drive, as can't run migration assistant on both, just imac)

- Option on start up with bootable usb, ask to choose the bootable disk, but only 1 is there- the usb, not mac hd. goes through language and after moment screen with utilities comes out. as after internet recovery process and dead end again.

My idea is, that it might be faulty SATA cable that I can't find anywhere for this particular macbook air.

Can I get a picture of that Cable best with link to buy and instructions in replacing it, picture of it. It doesn't seem to be as simple as in Macbook pro.

I appreciate it,

eva

Thank you for replies and suggestions. Is there any way for me in this condition to get to my folders and transfer data before drive replacement.

I saw that there is a firmware update for drives, is there a way for me to download it and update it now in current condition, it might help the drive?

You could install OS X to an external drive and run the update while booting from there.

Thank You William!

Apple had a recall for this model. Checkout this Apple notice: MacBook Air Flash Storage Drive Replacement Program. While this note is for the newer system. I've had a few still covered which were older models so give them a try first.

You might be able to use a drive/file recovery program running on an external bootable drive. I'm not sure if this failure is recoverable. We never really tried to recover anything as we had a good backup setup. We have a standard image and all of the client files are held externally.

This model of MBA doesn't have a SATA cable, the storage fits into socket on the logic board (similar to the way a wifi or bluetooth module would).

I'd reseat the storage first. If that doesn't work purchase replacement storage and hope that fixes it, because the alternative is a new logic board.

Some of the aftermarket flash storage manufacturers some with USB enclosures, so you can repair the computer first then attempt to recover your data. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/A...

If disk utility is giving you an error saying it cannot find the disk (which is what the folder with a question mark essentially means) you have three outcomes on that model:

  1. SSD failure(Most Likely): The computer cannot communicate with the drive. See the recall another user posted in their answer.
  2. Logic Board Failure: The circuitry and/or parts on the Logic Board have failed, preventing connection to the SSD.
  3. OS corruption: Something with your MacBook's startup OS files has become corrupt on the SSD. (Since you can't easily remove the SSD and connect it to another Mac though, this probably won't help.)

Unfortunately if a computer can't see the disk then there's a very slim chance of getting any data off of it.

The funny part is that when I ran Apple Diagnostics / Hardware Test (D on start up), in short and later detailed analysis, no problem has been found. I think trip to apple is unavoidable.
