Upgrading the Hard Drive Storage

Hello,

I've got a MacBook Pro 13" late 2011.

I run both Mac and Windows using Bootcamp but the hard drive is far too small for my requirements.

I've purchased a WD 1TB hard drive that I wish to install but I'm not sure how I can copy the data from the existing drive to the new one whilst also making sure I get the extra storage provided by the new 1TB Drive.

I looked on the Apple website and it says to re-install the disks that came with the MacBook but I don't have them because this was many years ago when I purchased the device.

As long as your current drive is working you're set!

Basically, you'll need a SATA to USB adapter to connect your new drive to your system externally.

Next, you'll need to download if you don't already have it the OS installer. Go to the Apple apps store and down load Yosemite.

Once you have downloaded the OS, connect your new drive to your system. you'll then need to prep the drive by formatting it using Drive Utility. Make sure it's setup with GUID partition. The next step is to install the OS by running the installer. Once done it will ask you if you want to transfer any of your user accounts, apps & data over to the new drive. At that point it's straight forward.

The last step is to check things out by restarting your system booting up under your new drive by holding the Option key. If everything is working shutdown your system and swap the drives. Don't forget to make sure your new drive is set as the boot drive via the preference setting.

Does Migration Assistant also copy over BootCamp partitions? I assume it copies virtualized environments; but if you've got the original drive partitioned for dual boot, will it transfer the non-GUID volume?

Yes it will! As it's a VM space within OS-X. It won't copy over external NTFS, exFAT or FAT partitions though. You'll need a Windows based backup program unless you want the files to reside in the OS-X partition.
