Microphone won't pick up any sound

My Shure SM57 Microphone stopped working. I've always heard that these things are basically indestructible and I didn't do anything rough or harsh on it, it just stopped picking up sound one day. The phantom power on the the device I plug it into does work (I know this because other mics that require phantom power work). Does anybody have any idea what could be wrong with it or what I can do to fix it?

My sure SM microphone does not work with the head on. If I put my lips on the top and sing it comes out ok but with the top screwed on it doesnt. What is causing this please. Kathy

I've found that most microphones stop working because the solder joints on the XLR plug come undone. I'm not sure what type of connection the SM57 has, but that would be the first place I'd look. If it has screw terminal connections, simply loosen and re-tighten. If they're soldered, visually inspect the joints for a dry joint or simple broken connection.

In some other cases, I've seen the pickup element itself become unsoldered, usually due to someone unscrewing the windscreen and accidentally pulling on the element.

If neither of those things are the issue, I'd take the entire thing apart and look for loose or broken connections. When you get down to it, they're really pretty simple devices and almost all the issues I've seen are physical-connection related.

(Also, I'm sure you've checked this, but make sure you're using a known good cable that works with another mic on a known good channel.)

Hello,

Well to start off the SM-57 is a dynamic mic, meaning that it does not require phantom power to work.

With that said, I would recommend opening up the mic by screwing off the bottom part to reveal where most of the electronics are. Check to see if there are any loose connections. If you don't find any put the mic back together, and try using it with a different XLR. I have found that XLRs often just stop working after a while if they are not wrapped properly, or not cared for.

I had this problem too. It was actually because the xlr plug was too far in the body of the mic, therefore not making a good connection. I just fixed it by moving the xlr plug to the correct spot. Be careful that the screw is reverse threaded (at least on the pga-57)

Hi,

that depends on how skilled you are. You can open the mic to take a look inside, maybe something easy as a loose cable or a capacitor is dried out/popped open. If you can repair it on your own, do it. Otherwise let somebody else do it for you.

I had the same thing on a Motorola C 290 mic had a faint pickup ..

there is a small slot on the bottom right of the word Sprint. Concentrate a vacuum cleaner with the small narrow attachment on this spot. it will suck any dirt or fuzz out. works fine....Sprint said it couldn't be fixed. I guess they wanted me to get a new phone.

You are absolutely correct Anthony, the Shure SM57 does NOT require phantom power. I'm retired now, but when I performed for a living, we used to use SM57's as a hammer to set up the stage with they're so tough. Ha, ha! Not really, but they ARE severely sturdy mics. And yes, 90% of mic troubles are physically related. Cold solder joint, crummy cables, sometimes a bad switch.

Since a microphone is just a coil of wire you can check its continuity by placing an ohm meter across the terminals, no reading means open circuit. If the joints are good then the copper wire is broken somewhere!

on other thing I have seen if the wiring is good will need to make sure the conduits in transformer (600-50,000 ohms I think) and mic diaphragm. sometimes iron filings collect on diaphragm and keep it from moving so no sound.
