Why is my trackpad button sticking

I have a MacBook Black and today, the trackpad button is registering as being pressed all the time.

I've taken the battery out to see if it was swelling and pressing on the underside of the trackpad but it happens with or without the battery being in.

I've used paper to slide as far under the button as I can to clean it but this too has had no effect.

Is there a way I can disable the button or replace the button?

my battery was dying on my macbook black and swelling. at the same time left side of my track pad button was lowering (physically)/not working. soon i had a constant click connection rendering my laptop useless. I pulled the battery and the button raised and all works perfect!!!!!!

*stuck swollen battery back in; all problems instantly came back, so pulled it back out.And as soon as the sun shines on my way for a new one :(

(side note - my battery health suddenly went from 96% to 84% in a week then the continuous problem and swelling occurred.)

every pad has a lil platic thing that make the botton bounce, may be that lil platic thing went out place, im sure of that.

The track pad on a Black MacBook stopped working, apparently stuck down in a permanent "select" position.

Per the above, I removed the battery and it worked fine with the battery out.

Gingerly replaced the battery and gently tightened the locking screw and, voila, working fine, at least for now.

Thanks much - that's exactly what it was. A swollen battery. Took it out, plugged in the cord & the left click is no longer in permanent select mode.

Simple diagnostic tip from this - put the battery either side down on a flat surface. It's not supposed to try to be round - time for one with flat faces ..
