Why would the Touch ID work, but not home button?

I just replaced my screen and battery and my home button is not working, despite the Touch ID still work. It sounds strange, but Touch ID still well.

I tried to unplug and replug the cable flex 5 times, having the same result: touch id ok, home button not working. I saw on the internet several videos about the replacement and in some of them, a small piece of metal is touching the lcd back panel, but in others, it is rotate to the bottom. I tried both, with no success.

It was working properly before the replacement, and I did everything very carefully. I don't have the foggiest idea about what to do. As the button can't be replaced, I think my iphone will be never the same :-

Any ideas?

I don't see any problem here. Do you?

Update

I might have found the problem. During the screen/battery replacement process I damaged the flex cable of the connector/housing. If you zoom the pictures, you will see that the plastic protection of the wires was peeled!

I'm not sure what extend it was: enough to break the connection or not. Everything I now is that the Touch ID is working properly, which makes me more hopeful.

If I need to replace this part, what would it be?

The picture shows a scratch in the flex cable where I connect the home button flex cable. Looking at the internet, I found that this flex cable comes from the dock. So, I believe I need to replace this part as well. Fortunately, it will cost only 10-20 Australian dollars. What is unexpected is that the Touch ID functionality still working like knew. Anyway, this is the best news I could have, because I won't need to replace the motherboard/touch id button, which would cost me hundreds of dollars.

The question is: that small scratch would be able to make the home button stop working???

The flex cable of the connector housing? Do you mean the dock connector?

What part do you mean exactly, also try pointing with the thin end of the screwdriver and maybe circle in red the exact part that you think is damaged. You can do this in paint. Also have you tried a hard reset, with assistive touch if necessary.

da

I posted a picture with a red circle to help you to see what happened with the flex cable that comes from the dock. I think I damaged that cable and it would explain the home button is not working.

Something I'm thinking to do is buying a new dock component and, without removing the current one, plug it in the motherboard and plug the home button on it and see what happens!

da

That could possibly be the reason not 100% certain I would replace the dock and see how that goes

da

It's possible. All components in apple, and all electronics nowadays, are extremely fragile. I would advise you replace that part and would expect all functionality to return. Also you did not answer my question if you have tried a hard reset.

da

Hi Hari. I performed a hard reset by removing the battery. I couldn't do it using iOS. Actually, I only know how to do that by pressing both power and home button. That's why I did it by disconnecting the battery.

Today I tried to use a new dock component. Before replacing the whole thing, I just connected the Home Button to the new dock, and after connected the new dock to the motherboard. Unfortunately, the problem remains. I think my home button will never work again :-

Any ideas?!

Hello Felipeqdrumond

First of all could you check the back of the home button there should be a small black nub, if not, then that's your problem, that we nub is what is needed for the home button to work properly.

Word of warning if you replace the whole button your Touch ID will never work again as every phone ha it's own individual button for that certain handset.

Hope this helps

Hi David! Thanks for replying. Well, I believe the black nub is there, in its right place. The button gives me feedback when I press it. If the nub is not there, would I have this feedback?

da

What kind of feedback do you get when you press the home button, also is the small black nub flush with the back of the button or is it raised slightly, it could have wore down but it would still be visible.

da

I can hear and fell that the button clicks. I'll open the device again to check the position of the black nub and, if necessary, perform a serie of attempts to make it work :-\

I bougth a new dock but it didn't solve the problem. Actually, I just plugged it prior to changing the whole thing, just to check if changing the dock would solve the issue. Unfortunately it didn't work :-/

I would suspect that you knocked off a component when replacing the battery, specifically FL5. That would cause the home button to not function but the Touch ID to work. It is fairly common when replacing the battery.

I could not find the 5s diagram to check my motherboard. Do you have it?

da

It's below the SIM tray to the left. Shoot me an email if you still can't find it, my info is on my profile page.

guys I personally found it to be just a connectivity issue between the plate covering the home button and that little piece og chip just under the connection to the dock. Just twist the flex around exposing that piece that needs to connect to the plate, screw the plate on and voilà! Just don't snap the home button flex! Good luck

Did anyone actually manage to fix it?

I got stuck with a water damaged iphone 5s and tried to fix it. Before giving the logic board a dip in 100% isopropyl, the touch ID was working and the home button was not. After my efforts, the screen is changed and doesn't change colours anymore but the camera is still black and the touch ID has stopped working as well as the home button.

The touch ID setup works; it does not skip to the failed screen. Instead it keeps on waiting for me to give it a finger impression. It does not register the touch though.

Any tips would be a great help. Cheers.

I had the same problem with an iPhone 5S that I bought from eBay and I was able to fix it by replacing a broken in half filter FL5 that is involved in the dock connector flex cable function. It's working perfectly fine now!

If FL5 if broken, could I just short it, or should I find a replacement piece? What would be the replacement?

I have the same issue, I changed my iphone 5s screen, then the home button is not working but finger print is ok, I found that one of the flex cable prongs is broken, my own logic explanation that this broken prong is for the home button press, other prongs are ok that is why the finger print is working, the problem is i don't have any guide to fix that prong :(
