Screen replacement failure, not sure how to proceed...

Hey everyone,

Followed the ifixit guide to replace the screen on my i337 Galaxy s4. I didn't seem to run into any troubles during the process, but when I went to charge the phone again (it's been dead for a few weeks), nothing seemed to be happening. So I pulled it apart, checked all the connections, and without replacing the midframe popped in the battery to check my work, to my surprise the screen came on and it started to charge.

So, back goes on the midframe, and it's not working again. After reading something about a short on the motherboard screw I put some electrical tape over that, and nothing. After a bunch of trial/error I seemed to figure out that when I put in and tighten the screw next to the SD card slot, it seemed to be shorting something out and the screen would turn off immediately.

I was still in the process of trying to figure out what was shorting out and how to stop it when all of the sudden everything stopped working, no more charging, screen no longer turned on, etc. At this point it's not pulling any current from the charger when I plug it in (0W on my kill-a-watt, it was as high as 9W previously when I plugged it in above).

I tried putting everything back on the old screen, but nothing is different, still not charging or pulling current. Tried different USB cables (known to work on other phones), different chargers, no difference.

Not sure where to go from here, if I've someone killed the motherboard, killed the charging port, killed the battery, etc and don't want to go around throwing money at a phone that might be totally broken. I sadly don't have another S4 to test out any of the parts on either. If anyone could give some insight on how to test if the usb port or the battery are what's &&^&@@ up, or if you have any other ideas, that would be great.

Thanks in advance!

It sounds like you fried the motherboard when you screwed in that screw next to the SD slot. If you have a friend with the same type of phone try to see if he/she will charge your battery for you or try theirs. I don't think there's a way to check the charging port without getting the motherboard replaced which is $99 dollars to $125 dollars. Yikes. If you do decide to buy a new motherboard you can get them from here.

And I will link a guide on how to replace it.

Best of luck I hope this helps.

Yeah, total bummer. I found a way to get around the charging port, you can apply 5V to the wireless charging adapter pins. This sadly did a whole lot of nothing too. Probably down to the battery or the motherboard now. Sadly I don't want to drop $100 on another motherboard only for it to have the same issue and short out and fry again. I'm thinking I'm going to send the screen back for a refund, looking at it it's missing some tape over some metal looking bits which I think might have been what shorted out in the first place...
