My 60" Samsung LED TV suddenly developed a dark smudge about 12" in diameter. I can't relate it to any specific occurrence, except that it started the day after I dusted the screen with the power on. Any ideas on a quick fix? I don't believe that the repair shop route will be cost effective.

Could it be due to pausing the screen for a period of time. I know with one of my Samsung and also my parent's Samsung, got dark areas due to having been paused on a certain page for so long.
With mine, and due to personal circumstances, the tv was left unplugged for about a month, when I turned it back on, it had gone.
Another person suggested getting a white screen and leaving it on a few hours.
If this does not fit your issue, my apologise.
