Wifi AND baseband problem

Hi everybody !

A friend of mine has an iphone 5 with quite a strange problem and asked me to repair it.

First, the main problem of the phone was its wifi connexion. The iphone can connect to wifi only few meters away from my wifi antenna. If the phone is 2-3 meter (or more !) away from it, the iphone still recognize the wifi hotspots, but is unable to login or to surf on internet.

I've tried to restore the phone but an error occured. I've checked the restore log and it's said : "The operation couldn\U2019t be completed. (AMRestoreErrorDomain error 1 - Failed to handle baseband update status message)"

I have a hot air soldering machine, so I can reflow or try to replace the faulty part. But I don't know which one it could be. So can sb tell me if he has already faced this problem and how he has solved it ? Between all the "antenna switches", and RF amplifier, which one can be faulty

The only way to figure this out is to:

1.) Consider the history of the phone. If there is water damage, or a recent repair, then you will be looking for visible damage on the board. If drop damage, then you will not see visible damage on the board

2.) If there is no visible damage on the board, then I generally consider board level troubleshooting for an iPhone to consume more labor time than the value of the phone. However, if it is just a fun project, your next step is to find the schematic for the iPhone 5 online and start measuring components to see if you can identify which of the dozen or more interacting components could be causing the fault.

Note---never try to solve a known hardware defect with a software restore, that is a good way to brick a phone.

1) No, there is no water damage on the phone. It worked good before the restoration, excepted the wifi problem...

2) Thank you for the advice. I won't earn some money for this repair, only the gratitude of my friend. So I'm not in a profitability point of view. It's just I'm frustrated to have an iphone 5 and to bin it...

At least, I've learnt something with this story : never restore a phone with an hardware problem. Thanks for that.

I'll come back to keep you updated, in case of I solve this problem. Could help.
