Battery life very short since I replaced the front panel

I successfully changed the front panel but now have a new problem. The battery once fully charged lasts only a few hours. Also the top part of the phone gets extremely warm while being charged. Has anybody encountered these problems? Does it mean I should replace the battery? Many thanks
