Here's the IFIXIT teardown on the display: Apple Thunderbolt Display Teardown.
This display has its own audio amp circuit which your symptoms sound like its having problems. You might try doing a good inspection of the solder joints to see if you have a cold joint. Otherwise you might think about replacing the logic board.
