Replaced lightening/headphone part, still won't charge?

After having trouble with charging his phone, my friend ordered the part to replace the headphone/lightening port on his iPhone 5s.

After connecting it all correctly and following guides etc we put the phone back together, and instead of charging the phone doesn't register anything (the screen still works with the 'out of battery' icons so we know it's still functional) but it now makes a quiet popping noise when you plug the charger into it?

Tried to check if we've missed anything so opened it up a further two times but after double checking every connector we touched, as well as everything next to what we touched we can't find the problem.

Any help would be great.

Thanks.

NOTE: what kind of issue did you have with the charging?

I'll make an assumption to get you started: assuming the phone used to charge before the attempted repair, I would try 2 simple steps before moving to more advanced troubleshooting:

1-Cleaning:

1-a- Disconnect the battery, clean the battery connector on the board with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and a soft brush.

1-b- Disconnect the charging dock connector, clean the connector on the board and the cable itself with isopropyl alcohol.

2-Power cycle:

2-a-Reconnect the charging dock connector, do not yet reconnect the battery;

2-b-Press and hold power button for 15 seconds, re-connect battery, start the phone and/or re-charge and start the phone.

If nothing changes, I'd put the old connector back in and test the phone. If the phone charges and works as it used to be, then the new connector is defective. Again, this is assuming that the old connector used to work before and the phone used to charge!

If the phone used to charge and doesn't charge anymore, you may have pried something off the board during the first repair. Let us know where you reach with the above steps and/or explain more what the initial problem was, in order for us to better troubleshoot the issue.

It slowly went from charging only when the USB cable (we tried several cables over time) would only charge when the phone was in a certain position and could not be moved without it stopping the charging.

Sorry, I should've put more information on that before I explained what I had done.

We did the replacement once the charging had fully packed in and wouldn't charge regardless of how you moved the cable or phone.

If you still have the old charging dock, put it back in try to charge the phone. If it works (in the special positions like you say), then the new charging dock is probably defective. Try using a new good quality one from a good supplier such as this one. iFixit have good products and a good warranty.

If the phone does not charge anymore using the old lightning dock OR any new known good lightning dock, then you may have damaged something during the first repair. At this point, I'd examine the logic board with good magnification, at first around the battery and lightning connectors on the board.

I'll give the board and check and get back to you, thanks.

The old charging dock was completely dead, that was why we replaced it. We couldn't get it to charge no matter how we positioned it so testing to see if it's defective isn't an option.

I live in the UK and we ordered it from replacebase.co.uk which I have used before for parts and are quite reputable.

Hope that that particular charging dock was defective, because that will be your least costly scenario. With those particular phone parts, the defect rate is high, which is why a good warranty is important.
