Why is HD removed to replace power supply

My Imac did nothing when I pushed the "on" button so I assume I need a new power supply unit. Your instructions are great but why do I need to remove the HD before I can remove the power supply? Also, is there anyway to check if the problem is the PS card. I'm a newbie & lack any equipment to check power. Thanks

You don't. Most of these guides are written by people who "write guides", they don't do the repairs. mSo you sometimes end up doing steps that you don't need to do.

As far as needing a power supply, look at the diagnostic LEDs.

Thank you for the input. I had a feeling that was the case but I thought maybe those steps prevented messing up the HD or something. Can you please tell how I look at the diagnostic LED's, where they are located & what I'm looking for? I took out the power supply but I have no idea whether it's the problem or not. Thanks

Here:

LED 1 indicates that trickle voltage from the power supply has been detected. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned off and your power supply is working correctly.

LED 2 indicates that the main logic board has detected proper power from the power supply when the computer is turned on. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and the power supply is working correctly.

LED 3 indicates that the computer and the LCD display are communicating. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and video signal is being generated.

LED 4 lights only if the computer detects an over-temperature condition. This LED will be OFF when the computer is turned on and running at the correct temperature.

Meyer,

Thanks again but my imac is an A1144 & opens from the front, not back & I don't see any LED's or arrows. Do you know where they are on my model?

da

Look to the right of the RAM slots, (they may be covered by a small piece of black tape).

da

Maybe, looked under the black tape but I don't know what I'm looking at. Do I plug the imac in (even with so many parts disconnected) to see if any lights go on?
