Is it possible for me to replace the track pad?

MacBook Pro6,1 17" Mid-2010 Model A1297

I purchased a new track pad because the one on my computer is cracked.

I am also in the process of researching and plan to replace the hard drive with a Solid State Drive.

I was waiting for the Hard Drive and then planed on replacing both myself.

I saw somewhere that the track pad was a difficult process and it was not worth doing due to the potential damage it could cause,

Is this something a novice like myself should take on? Is that true, and is it only for this particular model? I have an external track pad but would really like to replace my damaged one, what is your opinion?

To start with you will need to remove the battery, following this IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 17" Unibody Battery Replacement. Jump to this guide: MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2008 and Early 2009 Trackpad Step 31. While your system is a bit different the steps are the same.

I would recommend you let someone with more advanced skills take this on.

As to swapping out your HD for a SSD. I would recommend going with a SSHD (hybrid drive) Vs a straight SSD. A hybrid drive has a SSD for a deep cache (speed) and a traditional HD for the deep storage (space). I would recommend going with a Seagate unit: Seagate Laptop SSHD. Note in the Spec sheet Laptop SSHD spec sheet the line: SATA Transfer Rates Supported (Gb/s) - 6.0/3.0/1.5. What is important here is the SATA ports I/O speed in your system is SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) you must make sure what ever drive you put in is able to run at that speed.

Lastly, we have over 200 of this in service with very good results.
