Trouble Shooting Booting new Hard Drive

Hello Everyone

My apologies if this is a reoccurring thread but I need answers ASAP

Basically stock HDD in my 2009 Macbook Pro died after a long 5 years. Just installed a New Western Digital 1TB HDD to replace the old drive.

Everything is going fine up until I try to reinstall Mavericks.

1) I have already mounted the new drive and have formatted through disc utility.

2) I have old drive hooked up externally

3) When I click on Reinstall Mavericks a dialog box comes up that reads *TO DOWNLOAD AND RESTORE OSX, YOUR COMPUTERS ELIGIBILITY WILL BE VERIFIED WITH APPLE*

4) I Click Continue

5) A fast load circle appears and then quickly another dialog box pops up reading *AN ERROR OCCURRED WHILE PREPARING THE INSTALLATION. TRY RUNNING THIS APPLICATION AGAIN.*

6) I click OK and it bounces me back to the OSX recovery option box.

7) I click on Reinstall OSX and the whole process happens over and over again.

What's exactly happening here and what are my options? Anyone else experience this anomaly?!!

You could be facing two different issues here:

  • The recovery application is unable to install to your new HD. Bad SATA cable, wrong SATA spec'ed drive {need SATA II (3.0 Gb/s)}
  • The old hard drives recovery partition is damaged some how

What happened when you had the HD internally was it able to run at all? Can you recover your original HD's running partition? If not you'll need to create a bootable drive (i.e. USB Thumb drive) and copy to it the OS installer downloaded from the App Store to then run from it.

Update

Using your second Mac run Disk Utility to remove any partitions on the external disk (the drive we are prepping).

You'll need to run this app: DiskMaker X to run the OS installer which you have on your Mac (I do recommend you first make a copy of the OS installer before you use it). When you run it just make sure you select the correct drive let it create the partition.

Once the OS is installed using the Option key during start up to then select the new drive to make sure it boots (Startup key combinations for Intel-based Macs). Once your sure its working either mover the drive back into your MacBook Pro, or repeat the process again once you copy over to the new disk the OS installer & DiskMaker X application.

Don't worry if the OS version is not the newest on your iMac (if you have an older iMac that cant run Mavericks) as long as it is designed to run on your MacBook Pro you can then upgrade it to Mavericks or Yosemite.

Hi Dan, Thanks for your input.

It can't be the SATA cable because I just bought it and it shows the old hard drive in disk utility. For some reason it just doesn't want to allow me to reinstall OSX on the new HDD.

When I had the old HD internally it was not able to run, it froze at the apple load screen. I had a diagnostics report done and I was told the HD failed. When you talk about using a thumb drive and copying it over to the OS installer, how does one do that? I can just download it with my iMac and then just transfer over to laptop? Keep in mind my Macbook pro now will not allow me to get into OSX utility unless the old/failed drive is hooked up externally now. CMD+R only works when the old/failed drive is attached. I tried booting up with the new internal drive mounted but I just get the question mark folder at load screen.

Good you have a second system! OK, using your working system create a bootable drive. A USB thumb drive is just one option, if you have a FireWire or Thunderbolt drive they will work as well here (which are also faster). If you have an external case to host your new HD you can do that as well here.

Sorry to say Dan no luck on the bootable drive upload. When I tried doing it everything went well until I got this dialog box

*THIS COPY OF THE INSTALL OS X MAVERICKS APPLICATION CAN'T BE VERIFIED. IT MAY HAVE BEEN CORRUPTED OR TAMPERED WITH DURING DOWNLOADING.

What are my options now?

You got this error down loading from your iMac correct?

You'll need to find a friend who has a good copy downloaded, or try again. Try doing it late at night or early morning when the local internet connections are less used. You may find downloading from work or other better connected location. You may need to borrow a Mac system to do it though.
