Early 2009 24" iMac randomly shuts down

I have a 24" early 2009 imac that randomly shuts down. It does not appear to be heat related as the shutdown can happen immediately after logging in, or hours after.

I am usually in Safari or ARD when this happens, but then again, thats pretty much all I use this iMac for.

I have swapped the RAM with another set, the problem persists.

I am considering formatting the drive and starting over, but I don't know if this will have any effect.

ANY TIPS APPRECIATED!

THANKS!

Repeated crashes will scramble the MBD which leads to. . .more crashes.

Look at this solution

Boot to a repair volume and repair the HD. Have you blown out dust? Is is used din a humid environment? What OS are you running and do you have sufficient free space on the HD?

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

My late 2008 iMac 24" did the same thing, and was due to a faulty graphics card as the GPU was overheating. Usually the fans would rev up to try and cool the chip but to no avail. When it first started happening it could take hours before shutting down, but got worse over time.

iStatPro is useful to keep track of fan speeds and temps.

Have you tried running the hardware diagnostics from the Apple CDs?
