I know the processor is technically not upgradable, but are there any quad core i7 processors from other Macs that would be a "fit" for the quad core i7 Mac mini and be an upgrade?
How intensive would the soldering be?
The OS should find the upgraded processor just fine right?
The tear down pictures make this hard to figure out.

No - you'd have all sorts of issues with Firmware other problems.
You'd have to put an Apple OEM CPU in it to get any sort of Firmware/OS support so far there are no options, you can't just plunk any old CPU on an Apple system.

Very aware of that. I was pretty clear about using only Mac processors in my question.
It seems the 3840QM 2.8GHz from the Mac pro might be the only faster processor in the family.
For the money to get some old Mac pro parts and the time to try it seems a better deal to get a Mac pro with external drives.
I agree - sell your current unit, take that $ and what a replacement CPU (had there been one you could de-solder and ball to the board) and use it to get a better truly upgradeable Pro box.
