Grey screen on LCD but works on external monitor

Boot Up Mac and screen is Grey (no logo/mouse)

Can brighten/darken screen and keyboard

Plug it into a TV and i see my desktop on the TV and my mac works

I used skype/Facetime and the camera works too but still nothing on LCD only TV

The computer seems to work normal by using the TV as my monitor, the camera works and I can use skype and chat, but just a grey screen on the mac LCD. The apple logo is bright on the cover. so what needs replaced or is issue? Could the cable just be unplugged from screen to body? or did a circuit die on the logic board? Any suggestions or ideas?

That your external monitor works means the GPU/VGC logic board is OK. That you can't see the display points to an internal on-board issue. The keyboard behavior is irrelevant to your issue.

Without history (wet, dropped, crushed, you were inside, OS change, etc) hard to say what is wrong other than it could be a cable, or the Display (inverter = brightness = ok). LVDS controls data to the display.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

Hey, sorry to dig this up, but exactly the same issue here.

I took my MacBook Pro 15", 2011 apart to replace the keyboard (so most of it went out and back in). I tried to stick closely to the ifixit manual (and one website) to dis- and reassemble the MBP. Everything seems to work, as does the external Monitor, but the internal one stays grey.

Can you suggest a next step? I tried all the steps on the official Apple site for a problem like this (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204325).

Please help!

Checked the inside of my mac again after reading some posts and it seems like it's a broken LVDS cable (looks like it broke off some pins when I tried to wiggle it back in). Maybe this helps anyone with the same problem.

I had the same problem. Sound worked, could brighten/darken screen (turned up to full brightness it was a dark grey), backlight was working and apple logo was lit up. I tried doing a PRAM reset (command + option + p + r) and a few other things I found on the internet, nothing worked. I gave up, plugged my external monitor in and watched maybe 2 and 1/2 hours of movies. Unplugged my monitor, and now it's working again. WTF? Just hope it stays fixed!

how is the status almost a year later? ;)

My monitor is still working but the tyuio keys on the keyboard don't work any more! I plug in an external keyboard.

I think it's just falling apart I should get a new one but I'm disgusted by apple's lack of ethics when it comes to its production workers and I don't want to give them my money any more. But all other laptops feel inferior!

My laptop is doing the same. I got it 2015, don’t use it daily. I haven’t dropped it, no water damage. I was cleaning my screen when this same issue happened. I’m currently using HDMI plugged into tv to use my laptop but I have a movie I am showing this weekend at a 40th anniversary and I need this fixed! (commence hair pulling!) Do I take it in somewhere and say that the LVDS cable possibly has broken pins?
