Any chance of upgrading bluetooth board to newer version

According to Apple, only the MBP from 2012 and newer, running OSX Yosemite, can take advantage of the newer Continuity features like Handoff and Instant Hotspot, due to the Bluetooth board being different in older models.

Is there any chance of upgrading the Bluetooth board in a late 2011 MBP?

Or can it just be replaced for service reasons with an exactly similar board?

Only SOME of the '12 machines will work with Yosemite. The board will fit - will Yosemite allow it to do as you ask? Can't say for certain... you could try it and let us know.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

Thanks for your reply.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say "SOME of the '12 will work with Yosemite". My Late 2011 MBP is running Yosemite right now. Not a problem so far. It's just the Handoff/Continuity with iOS8 thing that seems to be falling short because, according to Apple, you'd need at least a 2012 or later MBP for that to work.

So I was guessing that maybe upgrading the Airport/Bluetooth card would do the trick, as I read around that it's something to do with the newer cards being able to establish direct wifi connections more effectively.

Is that board you suggested/linked an upgrade to the Bluetooth/wifi board I already have? Or is it the same part number? (as I see on the description, it fits early/late2011/mid2012 MBP's, so I'm afraid I'd be purchasing the same part to no avail).

Thanks.

I think Machead was focused on the hardware not software side of the question. In the case of Yosemite working as an OS it will run on the same systems Mavericks did. While the oldest systems may not run as snappy they can still run it.

As to HandOff services it requires a Bluetooth 4 LE board to work which is the root issue. So without alteration your system will not support HandOff.

I meant that some machines run some of the OS... not full functionality - this has been the story for quite a while, older Macs pushed to the newest OS run a sort of crippled version....and some of the 12 machines reportedly don't do hand off.

Not all of the older systems can be updated with the needed hardware!

So far it has been learned the last 15" optical drive'd MacBook Pro's can be updated with the needed hardware and the OS can be altered to support HandOff.

You will need to swap out your Airport/Bluetooth board from a BCM94331PCIEBT4AX to a BCM94331PCIEBT4CAX board.

You will also need to alter the IO80211Family.kext and IOBluetoothFamily.kext files within Yosemite.

For now I would wait as I'm sure someone will create a set of upgrade kits (when more is learned here) with the needed hardware and even a script to alter the needed OS files.

Another point here you will need to wait a bit anyways until the iOS and OS-X apps (other than Apple's) have been updated to support HandOff. Please review this: ArsTechnica - HandOff.
