Is there a Bluetooth 4.0 solution for iMac 27 mid 2010?

Hi,

I would like to upgrade my iMac 2010 EMC 2390 to Bluetooth 4.0.(BLE)

With Yosemite now out in the wild I'd like to add Handoff, Continuity, Instant Hotspot features, if possible, to my current iMac. Functionality presently not possible with the current installed card, one Broadcom BCM92046MD ( limited to Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR).

Is there a compatible BT 4.0 card I could buy and install? Would additional software tweaks be needed?

Please help if you can...Thanks in Advance

All the best,

Owen

I have the same model and haven't found any upgrade parts that add BT4.0.

According to this post at MacRumors, there is a way to enable the Continuity Features on older Macs by modifying kext.

Well, it's the first step in the right direction.

Here's the rest of the story: 'Continuity Activation Tool' Enables Handoff on Older Macs. Sadly, none of the iMac's are currently possible as they have a different Bluetooth board.

There is not an easy answer to this but long answer short: yes this should be possible.

Long answer is that it won't be easy. From what I understand it is definitely possible to upgrade the iMac 2010 with an Apple card supporting Bluetooth 4.0. The suggested card is the Broadcom BCM94360CD which is used in newer Macs. I've read multiple stories of people having succeeded to add handoff/continuity/instant hotspot/air drop to their Macs by swapping their card and even some YouTube video's claiming that it works. You don't have to change kexts either, it works out of the box with the card.

I have not encountered a detailed guide to install the Broadcom card. You can't simply swap them and you will need some kind of adapter. It's done in older Mac Pro's but that might be easier because of the space you have inside the Mac. How you can install the card in an iMac i don't really know. It will require some tinkering. I hope someone gets out an detailed guide how to this. The BCM94360CD card and adapter are sold by some Chinese sellers on eBay and seem to work fine.

I'm just not brave enough to try this without some guidance. I did add an SSD drive to my 2010 iMac in the official way (same way it gets factory installed) and it wasn't even that hard. As soon as someone gets out the guide I will give it a go. Would still be a perfect machine if I can get this done. 1.5 TB fusion drive, Intel i7 processor, 16 GB ram and Bluetooth 4.0. That machine would be fine for another 2 years at minimum.

It is most certainly possible. Iv even upgraded my 2007 20" iMac to 802.11ac and bluetooth 4.0. Don't buy the "kit" from osxwifi tho, way to expensive. You can find everything you need on eBay or amazon!! Good luck!!

Probably answered already in another thread but by now there is actually a very simple solution. You can buy a replacement Bluetooth/wifi card that is an all in one solution. You can buy it here (link below) although there might be others that sell this solution too. This is an actual plug and play solution. I haven't tried it myself as my Mac does everything I need at the moment even without handoff and continuity.
