Replacing the power button only (not entire keyboard)

Hi everyone,

I have a second hand MacBook Pro in which the little connector coming from the keyboard is snapped in two.

I know that in order to replace a faulty power button, the most straightforward thing to do is replace the entire keyboard, but as everything else about the keyboard is fine, I didn't want to go and spend 50$ just because of the power button.

I figured I should try fixing it myself, but to my disappointment, I couldn't solder a wire onto the paper membrane, it just melted through, It seems like the connection paths are made of some powder drawn on.

What i want is to route the power switch back to the logic board power on contacts, I have a few ideas, either

  • A, find some sort of switch (maybe from a phone) that has copper paths can fit in there and route the wires
  • B, use conductive glue to extend thin wires on whats left of the power button connector.

Does anyone know how well conductive glue holds up, as i have never used it, or does anyone have a better solution, (can other power switches fit in there?)

I think you'll end up making more of a mess here with either of your two plans. Conductive glue only works as a small drop bonding two things together electrically, not to create wire paths.

Finding a switch that meets the space limitations will be tricky and you would still need a means to hold the switch.

Basically, I think your best option here is to replace the full upper case and not try to re-invent things.
