Why is my computer running slowly

I have a powerbook g4 1.67ghz with 2 gigs of ram installed (which is brand new). it is the 5,6 version powerbook and is running 10.5.8.

ok, to start, I have a brand new battery but the computer will not charge it. the icon says not charging or a battery with an X in it. the computer will not power on with the battery installed but will if the battery is removed.

second, every time I try do an action I get a spinny ball for at least 10 seconds.

I have done all the research into these problems but would like an opinion from someone who knows...

I have done a disk repair and checked activity moniter permissions repair cache dump and the like.

is it worth it to buy a new hard drive, logic board power supply/soundcard and are any of these things even the issue. thanks for you help, I love you.

There could be a number of reasons... the RAM (or a bad RAM chip or slot) The HD could be failing, or just need to be backed up, wiped (reformatted) and have the OS installed. THE OS you're pushing that old PowerPC processor pretty hard.. TWO FULL revisions of software designed to run on Intel Chips...

If you do a safe (shift) boot do you still get the beach ball. Are there any peripherals plugged in when you get the beach ball? (try unplugging them).

If you put the old RAM in and run an older OS does it still beach-ball (then a new HD would be in order if this is an original HD).

Try dropping back to 10.4 if the wipe of the HD didn't solve the problem.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

I have tried the safe boot and old ram. no peripherals, still the same, super long beachy ball bullcrap. I don't have a startup disk. if I back up my hard drive will I lose all relevant iTunes library info. can I back up my current os onto an external hard drive and then reinstall after I wipe the hd or install a new one, which I currently have actually.

if you clone or restore your current drive to an adequate sized backup drive (nothing else can be on that drive) you should be able to boot to that drive, then use the Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility->disk tools to reformat (partition) your onboard drive. Then use disk tools to restore, or clone back the "backup" ''' With your problem though this could take a long time. FWIW You should still keep a current backup of at least iTunes, photos and data.
