When i open my MacBook, the screen is just a picture of a file and a blinking question mark in the middle of the file. Clicking anything else does not work. Would anyone know what is wrong with my MacBook?

This icon means that the computer does not see any bootable disks. This most often happens when your hard drive dies. Can you boot off of the Mac OS CD that came with your computer? If so, you know that it's a problem with either the hard drive or operating system.
You should attempt to backup any data from the drive BEFORE you try to install a new operating system or run disk repair software.
If you have a current backup, then you could try erasing the drive and reinstalling the operating system. If the OS installer doesn't see a disk, then you have a hardware problem: most likely a bad hard drive, but possible a hard drive cable or loose internal connection.

agreed + I would say 90% chance of hard drive failure or corrupted system and 10% cable or connection.
